Welcome to the Online Application Portal for the Doctoral Programme ProMoHist!

The LMU's doctoral programme ProMoHist will guide participants through the process of earning a doctoral degree in modern and contemporary history within three years. It offers training courses on research skills to enhance the participants' methodology and presentation. Students also participate in research seminars and specialised research interest groups that are related to their topics and will discuss the results of their research. They are encouraged to attend and present their findings at national and international scientific meetings to foster international collaboration. The programme is aimed at highly qualified applicants who have recently graduated in an historical discipline and want to carry out innovative research in any field of modern and contemporary history (16th- 20th centuries).

For application, please submit the following documents:

  • a copy of your General Certificate of Education Advanced Level / High School Diploma (equivalent to a German Abitur), please include a transcript if the document is not written in English
  • an academic transcript (aka academic record, diploma supplement,  statement of learning, record of achievement) listing all the modules or subjects you have studied at university level in each year, plus the marks or grades you achieved for each module and the credit rating and level (BA, MA) of each module
  • a copy of your MA Thesis
  • a Curriculum Vitae (CV), including a list of your publications if applicable
  • an outline of the research project your are planning to pursue, including a work schedule (up to 5 pages)
  • contact details of two possible referees (lecturers or advisors who could support your application with a letter of reference) or possible supervisors of your PhD thesis at Munich

Applications by mail can not be accepted. The application portal will be open from December 18th, 2017, to February 18th, 2018 (midnight).

Decisive criteria for admission are the academic qualification of the applicant, the excellent quality and feasibility of the suggested research project, and team spirit. If your application meets the requirements, you will either receive a notice of your admission, or you will be invited for an interview at Munich university. These interviews are taking place later in March or April 2018. Applicants are admitted to start their studies at the beginning of the summer semester 2018.
