GraduateCenterLMU Online Workshop for Doctoral Candidates

Excellent scientists need excellent data, but they also need to be able to effectively communicate the results and significance of their research to their peers in the community. Writing good papers is hard work, even for many experienced researchers. Being aware of the criteria that papers must meet and using the writing process efficiently can make the task easier.

In this online workshop, participants will learn about the structural and language norms for research papers published in English. Participants will also be introduced to a variety of strategies that will provide assistance to draft texts more efficiently, to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and to revise them effectively. During the online workshop, professional input from the instructor will alternate with practical written exercises and discussions of relevant issues.

Workshop topics:

  • Managing the writing process professionally
  • Understanding structural and language norms for English research papers
  • Examining structural relationships within and between sections of a paper
  • Recognizing stylistically adequate and inadequate language
  • Giving and receiving feedback on texts

Requirements:

  • To ensure an optimal workshop experience we recommend that participants have an English language proficiency on the level C1 or higher according to the CEFR scale. For a quick self assessment see Cambridge Assessment English.
  • Because the workshop uses material from participants, there is a call for papers two weeks prior to the workshop. Guidelines, a deadline and where to send the paper will be sent to participants once their enrollment in the workshop is confirmed.

Organization:

  • The workshop will take place from March 20 to 23, 2023. In between workshop sessions, participants will be given a written and/or reading task to be completed before the following session.
  • On March 23, 2023, participants will receive a 30-minute 1:1 feedback from the instructor.
  • Following the 1:1 consultation, participants will be asked to complete an additional writing component that will also receive feedback.

Language of workshop: English

Target group: Doctoral candidates of LMU Munich from the Natural Sciences (the number of participants is limited)

Certificate of attendance: Participants will receive a certificate of attendance from the GraduateCenterLMU.
