After your studies you decided that doing research would be a joyful experience. So you have begun a doctoral project. Perhaps you are almost at the end now and you are considering to pursue a career in academia. The next logical step would be to apply for a postdoc project. The lecture addresses issues that should be taken into account in your decision-making process. To illustrate possible steps towards a career in academia, typical development options for Germany are presented as examples. An excursus briefly touches on possible alternatives that could also be considered for further professional advancement.
