Effective Supervision of Doctoral Candidates for Postdocs

Postdoctoral scholars play a pivotal role within the academic landscape, engaging in a diverse array of responsibilities. They frequently serve as a primary point of contact for doctoral candidates, even though their official supervisory roles are limited.

Workshop Date (June 25, 2024)
This workshop aims to delve into the intricacies of the postdoctoral role in supervising doctoral candidates and equip participants with strategies for productive engagement. This includes a comprehensive exploration of one's own responsibilities in the supervision process and strategies to improve transparency of expectations regarding rules and roles. Furthermore, an exchange of experiences in doctoral supervision to facilitate peer-to-peer learning is encouraged. Depending on participants' needs, various supervision models will be explored as well as different phases of the doctoral journey, and mutual expectations between supervisors and doctoral candidates.

Optional 1:1 Coaching Sessions (June 26, 2024)
On June 26, there will be an opportunity for individual coaching sessions lasting 75-90 minutes. During these sessions, participants can reflect on their professional challenges, extending beyond doctoral supervision, and develop action plans. Please note that a limited number of coaching appointments are available and must be booked in advance of the workshop.

Language of workshop: English (coaching sessions can be conducted in either English or German)

Target group: Postdocs of LMU (the number of participants is limited)

Certificate of Attendance: Participants will receive a certificate of attendance from the GraduateCenter^LMU.
